In a personal message to me via facebook send a few minutes ago, Rod Humble told me that he has left Linden Lab as CEO last week.
The IM I received
He then announced it to friends, family and coworkers on his personal facebook page.
“Its been a great 3 years! All my thanks to my colleagues at Linden Lab and our wonderful customers I wish you the very best for the future and continued success! I am starting-up a company to make Art, Entertainment and unusual things! More on that in a few weeks!”
After 3 years of running Linden Lab and bringing a lot of improvements to Second Life he resigned and is going to start up his own company that will make art, entertainment and all sorts of wonderful stuff.
It is not yet clear who will replace him but I wish him lots of success with his new project.
This news comes as a bit of a surprise and shock and there is no official announcement yet.
Although Rod’s name has now officially been removed from the Linden Lab leadership page;
Linden Lab management and board, now without Rod’s name.

I wouldn’t read too much into it, top execs these days do not stay with the same job, on average, more than a few years. Gone are the days of the CEO staying for 8 years, 10 years, or more, they move on because that is the way the corp society works these days.

True but unlike with some other CEO’s I’ve felt that Rod actually liked SL and did a lot of work to improve it.
During his time with LL SL has changed more then in several years before.

That is shocking news. First Cloud Party closes down, now Rod leaves the Lab. What a bad day. Clearly you have the topic for the next radio hour now. Looking forward to it. I love your show:)

Oh this is not cool. Rod absolutely loved wandering around in Second Life and took an interest in its communities that far surpassed M’s and even Philip’s. I wish Rod the best, and once again, fear for SL’s future. Sigh.

Perhaps Rosedale should consider appointing someone who isn’t among the big corporates. Then perhaps we can see a return to technical and community led projects that benefit the real advancement of the platform, rather than it running after the current popular trends.

Not surprising. Didn’t even know Phil Linden wasn’t CEO anymore after he came back from the other person being ceo…ultimately, It doesn’t matter much. But good luck with startup.

Losing Rod is really a shame. I’m not sure, but losing Cloud Party might be an even bigger shame. People were so excited about Blue Mars… then not… and now another promising world ends before it really starts.
For those of us who like making things more than killing things, it seems like the only MMO’s that can survive are Minecraft and that world where peeps enjoy patching upgrades onto 2003 avatars.
Whatever its flaws, SL is an amazing place. Sort of made more amazing by the fact that so far nobody else seems able to get any traction in this space.

I don’t think calling a Virtual World an MMO is quite correct. And Opensim is doing well. Better, it cannot be killed by the fortunes of any one company. Yes, no opensim grid has the density of people and goods of SL. But there are other advantages. Like carrying your virtual world creations on thumb drive, hypergrid between worlds no matter how small or large, full backups of all your work and so on. And of course all those SL skills, viewers, scripts worke in opensim. OK, a few scripts have problems and the official SL viewer went SL only due to some new sub-licenses as I understand it. But still.

As it usually goes with Linden Lab communication style, we might not even get any news from them for days, months, years. Let to speculate and gossip indefinitely, as is often the case. My best wishes to Rod, however. I hope he finds happiness in his new adventure!

LL needs to realise that to us SL is like a country, even though we don’t get a vote to decide who our next “King” will be, we would like someone to tell us when the last one abdicates!
