In an interview with ‘The Next Web‘ Ebbe Altberg (CEO of Linden Lab) says that a beta of ‘Second Life 2’ (no official new name yet) is expected to be launched in 2015 while the final version should be ready in 2016.
To achieve this Linden Lab is hiring 40-50 new people.
Ebbe feels that with the current state of technology, market interested and available hardware and software available, this is the time to try something big.
Second Life 2 should offer the users more and better tools for creators, games, designs, good, and of course all the things SL has now will be part of the new world.
Linden Lab hopes that the users who tried SL in the past and have not stayed, to return and try it again.
It is time for the SL community to grow, time for SL to go mainstream.

Statements that I have read say that you will only be able to carry over a limited amount of your things They dont state which things., Im guessing nothing you purchase will carry over. Nothing already created will carry over. Which means you start from nothing again. No thanks LL. I have spent alot of rl money on sl and if I cant bring my inventory and my Lindens, no thanks. Alot of people feel the same, and I see Second Life 2 bombing because of that fact.I know alot of peope who feel the same.They say Second Life will remain, I will remain with it,

They don’t know yet what we can carry over, it all depends on the tech they will be using, it makes sense for them to say they won’t make SL2 worse just so we, for instance, can bring our 3 year old sculpty chair with us.
As pretty much every game, VR and 3D stuff out there is build with mesh I expect them to allow us to take quite a bit of mesh stuff with us, but we don’t know yet.
It is too early to know anything or get upset.

nothing you have is sl can be trans to sl 2 that means you will lose everything you have paid rl money for I can not see people wanting too give everything up that they own to start all over again

Where do you base that on?
Do you know that we can’t transfer ANYTHING to SL2?
Because so far I’ve heard that at least some mesh objects should be transferable.

I have10s of 1000 usd in inventory. Make it transferable, you will do this. I have 10 years in world, do you even care what I have paid for. Not starting from scratch. I will tell you this: Destroy our inventories may cause difficulties between us and you. Think well, Second Life

Linden Labs if secondlife 2 is coming out,fix security issues, improve on the graphical interface, fix stability…..Also if you noticed Linden Labs, once secondlife intergrated the teen grid, secondlife has not been so hot….When you had it adult only during its initial startup, It saw more activity and productivity. I’m sure you noticed. Secondlife should be adult only customers, meaning you can have gambling and everything else you used to have games like slingo and tringo where players could make revenue aside from content creation made money flow in the game..These were innovative ways to include everyone focus on including people. Focus on all the avenues you have to take to include everyone (adults). Leave the secondlife as is. Teens can stay. If you make secondlife 2 adults only people won’t care as much about what they lose cause theyll have the expirience I had at the beginning of secondlife. It was anything but boring………….

On the surface it seems you’ll take a hit in your revenue. You won’t. Having gambling and other adult oriented stuff in the game will help you. Money can flow freely. When you intergrated teen grid, you took away things we could do and say as well. That made things more impersonal. Think about it and I know you’ve heard this argument b4 but perhaps statistics will help go back and look at the time b4 you intergrated teen grid and look at the activity….and now….

ponders if all the stuff we’ve made, bought, created carries over to the new one OR do we lose it all .. that’s a lot of money gone.WOULD NOT BE HAPPY.

Not a chance….that would stifle the abilities of the new platform, which is a problem the current SL already suffers from.

Have two different versions as other games and social communities have done.
To say “Here’s the new, we don’t care what you already bought, out with the old.” Is a bit of a middle finger.
If anything, it would be nice, of course wishful thinking, to ask that you’d be credited in the form of non sell-able Linden Dollars. Currency that you could reuse to buy some similar items or updated items from the same creator that you originally bought from.
But look at other game systems, Playstation for example, it’s backwards compatible, not all the way back to the first one made, but they try to allow it were you could play like Playstation 1 disks on a PS2 and PS2 on a PS3..
Nintendo does it too… and they are fine.. they got rather great graphics.. Making it slightly backwards compatible isn’t going to screw anything up.
I disagree and I don’t care what anyone may think or try to say to reason with this.. we have technology that can operate fine and be backwards compatible.. to make it fresh slate and not at all BC.. period is just them /not/ wanting to put further resources into making people happy.
I have seen other companies do this, and they lost a lot of their community.. they eventually kept the old version and also had the new version too.. (they saw it as a big mistake to just wipe the past entirely)
So what I’m trying to say out of all this.. they need to make it somewhat backwards compatible OR allow a way for us to at least transfer sculpt maps to mesh maps.. (Maybe we can already do this sculpt to mesh, I’m not 100% sure… in either case… wouldn’t seem too hard.)
The old school prims still have use, I don’t know how they could replace those.. I mean if I want to make a quick sky box.. I rez a box.. hollow it out, turn it on it’s side, and bam instant build platform to build in the sky with.
My only hope is they don’t royally piss on the community.. companies tend to want to push forward, and instead of a slow convert they just outright redo it all….and do so at a very great cost.. generally at the expense of others.
Always seems that they want to make a sacrifice of a “minority” to gain a majority.. and it rarely works out that way.

I don’t think its pissing on the community per say to do this i spent thousands of dollars on lonewolf mackenzie to buy skins, clothing etc. I eventually learned to make clothing first, then later skins. I urge everyone to learn to do this as well. If you need to learn hit me up when the new grid comes around. I taught a lot of people in secondlife’s history. I would be happy to pass on knowledge. The new grid coming about is a good thing. It gives us a chance to make some money too. All of you. Not just me who started in secondlife’s roots. Love you all and appreciate you all for all you’ve done for me over the years. I would be perturbed too to lose my stuff, but I’m also excited. Give linden labs a chance guys.

Exactly how can I believe this is a much better and revolutionary improvement when they are announcing it will be in beta in a year? That could only be remotely possible if the entire architecture was pretty firm and a team reasonably put together and integrated. Since I have heard they are in a huge hiring spurt this seems a bit hinky or rather wishful thinking or marketing speak to me.

I think you’re confusing second life with a AAA title. Unsaddled with the concerns of the old content and the ever present second bitching of the game’s population, it wouldn’t take 6 months to do a ground-up rewrite on a new set of engines, 4 months of player testing and server load configuration plus the ability to actually distribute processes correctly and it’s out in a year with some polish to it.

As time goes on, and the resources used in any virtual environment, will be shared resources, the need for server farms will become obsolete to LL as they move towards a content and technology provider position.

If users have to go thru new registration process, I hope like hell there is a secure way if nothing else that we could resume same avatar name (by choice) and not have someone wanting to steal my online avatar identity by signing up for it before I get a chance to.

Ebbe has said that the plan is that we will be able to have our SL names in SL2.

heres the thing,i love sl sure it has it quirks …. just as SL2 shall…..And honestly….Transforming goods and avators to the new platform should be allowed….Fix the rl issue its not the platform…If You cant fix excisting l Sl what makes You think Your actually clients will beleive SL2 shall be any better.

Exactly! Why not work on the existing SL and gradually make changes (eg.like the intro of mesh) and not alienate thousands of existing loyal users?

I’m a creator myself so I’m looking forward to the new tools. However if LL decides to go the same direction as other platforms and they start to charge $$$ for “little perks” I’ll leave

As a creator who has a large inventory of sculpted things that still sell to this day, I wouldn’t be against moving on… I’m all for change… as long as the marketplace/economy of the game is improved and I have the same opportunity to make income off of my creations.
The problem is that Im not too confident in LL… and if Facebook took it over, I’d bet they’ll siphon all of the money out of it that they can and kill it.

Ofcourse nothing will be carried over, if it used the same objects, prims and graphics it would be just an SL update and not a NEW SL – Forget everything about SL when you reach SL2 – I migrated to a Professional Open Sim called Kitely and starting over was really easy with so much community and CEOs help

I’m pretty sure some things will be able to move to SL2, like mesh.
But if SL2 is a LOT better you probably won’t even want to or at least start replacing everything asap.

for content creators we get to be pioneers on this new platform i was a pioneer in the first secondlife. my first avatar was Lonewolf Mackenzie…since we’re all starting over from square one it’ll be great. You can be rest assured when you start your Avatar will be on point. You won’t need mesh bodies or mesh heads. You may not even need skins as it will be a complete graphical overhaul.

i agree its scary but its also exciting to see what can happen i look forward to their progress and hope to God I’m not dissapointed with the results. First of this is their baby, we should really limit input. They did a good job with secondlife’s interface, but if you think about it. It had a lot of security issues. If they make a new one, they can fix those issues in the games development. This is their time. We are fans linden labs don’t let us down =P.

Indeed. We do have to remember that most data only lasts for 10 years before it starts to get corrupted. I have known this for a long time as well, and most SL content is at least from 2007. I know the regions I have land on are from that time.
As I work on getting more land in Glinda, I do realize also that I will be working as people are not only leaving the region, but SL itself and heading over to the new SL2. It is inevitable that LL will eventually closeSL1 down due to the user base leaving it and heading over to the new platform, as well as data corruption from being so old. It’s like completely starting over again, and it is something that is expected at least once every decade, as data only lasts that long before it becomes corrupted.

So far it seems that you will be allowed to take your avatar or at least your SL identity to SL2 and I doubt they will create a whole new monetary system.

Im never sure how I feel about change until I see how it moves. So Im just gonna keep doing what I always do. Take one day at a time. Go with the flow , if they end up as currupt as FB or the others and greedy.. Then Ill find somthing else to enjoy and retire from sl. doesnt really matter to me to loose it all together if I am going to loose the total aprox 5k us dollars or more ive spent here since 06. So crossing fingers.

This new project will not succeed unless current SL users are allowed to transfer their accounts and full inventories over to the new grid. Too many of us have invested too much time and money into the current grid to simply give it all up and start over from scratch. All that work for nothing? Who’d seriously want that?

Accounts will very likely be transferable, but not ALL of our inventories.
Which is a shame but understandable, some of us have 2007 sculpties in our inventory and it would be silly to have to make something entirely new be able to work with something that old.
But it is very likely that we’ll be able to import our mesh.
Either way, too soon to tell.

Being a SL user since 2008, and seeing that the economy there is so bad now, shops closing and the mentality of even the newbies dropping dramatically, its going to be an uphill battle for LLs to in anyways justify this stuff once more. LLs are counting on attracting new users and denying the older stuff to the new platform. While a better engine and platform are a good thing, LLs has ALWAYS, without listening to its clientel, justified its bone-headed mistakes by saying ‘we are just going to do it’ and not listening about the lag, the copybot stuff, the lack of security for business, and other things. Instead they throw candy at people before its ready. Although it is far more stable than previously, SL is too little too late, and its sad at the economy right now as is. LLs has a friggin tough time ahead if it ever hopes to make a mark on the newer populous. The majority of users, in my opinion, will always be middle to upper age, because of the pathetic lack of attention span of the younger generation.

if we all start from zero again thats fine I am willing to do that but think of some of the players that have sunk $1000s of real money into the game its not really fair for them to lose that investment and have to reinvest that kind of money again to just be par to where they are now. so unless LL has some way of making up for peoples loss i can see many people just cutting their loses and not continueing with SL. SL2.0 will be a lifeless world if they can not get the content creators and players to migrate to the new platform. although an the bright side of that I am sure land value will be cheeper…but then again we are talking about LL so ya I dont think so.

I think of it this way. Not defending LL here at all, but the TOS that all of us has agreed to states that LL can pull the plug on SL at any time for any reason and without warning, permanently. They own the game and reserve that right. We are only the users of their product.
I hope SL2 succeeds in some way because if it doesn’t I have a feeling they will pull the plug on all of it.

This amazes me. I welcome the idea about bringing on a new SL, but I agree with most of the posts here. We all devoted our time and money in to developing SL and the players in SL are the asset to the game. Since 2007 i vested in SL and to leave to go to SL2 with nothing to show for it, is wrong.

It will really be hard for all of us. From people who spent less than 10 dollars on the game to people who spend 2/3 of there paycheck on it.. It will be hard for all of us. But I bet it will get a lot of attention from people and it will be somewhat better. People who are going to quit because of this needs to actually think that this time CHANGE IS GOOD. Now I do have some silly questions that are probably really obvious but.. Will it improve speed in the game? Or “Lag”.. Because I personally have my settings all the way low and Its still really slow. But will it actually improve speed? Please forgive my dumb question ^-^

I will definitely quit if this happens i will not lose my invo that i have just spent time and money on . If mesh can transfer over ok good and my mesh avi as well but im sure LL will screw this up as usual people who spent 5-10 years on the game will not like this one bit .I feel sorry for creators that have to start all over and for regular players as well . I guess this will be my last year on sl it was fun while it lasted

I am a creator of an entire city and have to start from scratch but I am exited and look forward to trying out new tools and having new options.
As a SL builder you’re used to rebuilding stuff all the time because the technology keeps moving forward, it is part of the job.
And I don’t care about my old stuff either, I have an inventory full of rubbish, even 6 year old skulpties.
I keep replacing my inventory stuff all the time as well anyway.
And SL is not going anywhere any time soon.
LL will not kill SL till it stops making a profit, when Sansar (SL2) comes, they will not turn SL off, if you prefer SL2 or are so attached to your old stuff, you can stay there probably for a couple of years, maybe even for a loooong time.

Disaster route for me – would rather they fix and upgrade the existing world.. I have been a charter member with Lifetime Membership since 2003 and have literally spent many tens of thousands of US$ since then on my content. I own more than 2.5 entire sims, and have created historic content, unique landscapes and memorable places and residential areas which have existed in SL for nearly 12 years now.. all that is to be non transferrable, or worse left as a legacy where no one will ever want to go? Plus my avatar and possessions and style and everything that makes me ME relies upon objects skins, textures and systems that I have purchased. Starting again as a ‘noob’ with nothing after investing enough money into SL to buy a luxury car or round the world trips, plus 11 years of dedicated SL work… no thanks !

The only way to upgrade and fix the current world is by starting from scratch.
SL is 12 years old, you can’t keep upgrading a T-Ford.
You can always choose to remain in SL, it will be around for quite a few more years.
But quite a few other thing will be transferable, probably at least mesh stuff, textures, etc.
And your avatar identity will be transferable as well.

my whole online buisness has sl at its core. I embrace change. shooting video in sl with its old physics engine and particle effects frustrate me. a million HUDs to achieve animation sequences is difficult sometimes too. I spend allot on sl but if VR grows as a consequence of a new platform then bring it on! it cant hurt me really and only serve to make my buisness better. i do feel though for the average player. Its like rl urban development a place loses its charm when the hipsters move in and gentrification starts. Ive been a VR bedowin for more than a decade now sl2 doesnt change that and ill probably have to move from there too. Its the nature of progress. Ive left piles of objects in other worlds i dont even remember.

I have played Second Life for over 5 years and the last thing I want to give up is my avatar, lindens and inventory. Allot of my things I have are one of kind items that you can’t find any where ells on SL. So if you are expecting me to give that up, you have another thing coming. It’s one thing if users like myself can transfer all inventory to the new Second Life 2 but from what I’m seeing and hearing from prier post it’s not going to happen. I’ll just stay with the original Second Life (I guess for how ever long it’s going to last after SL2 is launched). If that happens LL will loose a potential player and maybe even more and that might end up being there down fall. I’ve seen it happen before with other online 3D world chat apps.

I am in the same position as you but would be glad to lose all my old stuff if I had to, if it meant moving to a much improved virtual world.
Besides, I wouldn’t want to live in a world filled with 2007 era sculpties.
But it is too early to worry, Sansar is in a real early stage, pre-alpha even.
And it is very likely that we’ll be able to export our mesh stuff.

I’m an average Second Life user and am not a premium member despite being on SL for well over seven years. However, I do look forward to Project Sansar and see what sort of advancements will be made. I myself have put much money into my current SL and it would be nice if I could transfer my current mesh avatar to PS. However, not having much money to keep spending on something like a new computer to run it better or an Oculus will probably make it useless for me.

there’s too many social impact for the pull the plug Second Life 1 for at least 5 years they would have thousands of users at their front door having mental breakdowns because Second Life is there life there is so many disabled users that’s all we do I could survive I know people that could not if they will pull the plug on Second Life one like that so trust and believe this is the US that second life is based out the government is not going to allow them to pull the plug there’s too many military interest for that to happen it will happen eventually once want the new Second Life get up and running but not right away don’t go into a panic frenzy

Because that something new is just Second Life, but better. They ARE fixing all the problems, by starting fresh. There comes a time when you have to stop trying to fix the T-Ford and build a new car.

If you care about SL, improving it is not a waste of money and that is what Sansar is supposed to be.

I should hope that it is different, and a fresh start, and, that copyright infringement issues are not so rampantly abused. How many actually creators have you seen? do you know there is a massive percentage of mesh, and other things, taken from other places on the web illegally? As a custom Chopper seller, I purchase many kits to build my choppers, in the most original sense that I can without creating parts myself, since I do not possess this scope of knowledge. I cannot tell you how many items I have personally seen, that come from other sites out there, sites like turbosquid.com – who by the way has their own Terms of Service, that tell you in no way are these items to be in Second Life, and other sites are the same, artists who actually made the things people sell in sl are getting robbed.
Then let’s talk about music, since joining second life, I have been an active working musician in that grid, and others. I have seen many people using artwork, music, even making instruments or running tribute band services for 15-45 us dollars, and claiming that they are legitimate owners of the right to do so. Today on marketplace, I saw a seller that has ripped many of the vehicles he is selling from the fallout 4 game files, and is selling them to make a profit, nobody can report him without purchasing said stolen item.
Copy botters . . . . this code was open source, hopefully there were lessons learned there.
Second Life for more than a few years, was a home to me, 12-16 hours a day, many live concerts for many a listener, but it has become something of a tarnished thing now. I still do shows, build bikes, but I have much less desire to do much else in there anymore. I look forward to the new world, and possibly the old one finally getting focused on in a more positive light, but there is much to be done for Second Life to restore itself anything of its former glory/

I have 8 & 1/2 Years Invested in the Current Second Life .. If a New one opens with out ALL transferable I will go back thru my Bank account and DEMAND a TOTAL REFUND PLUS Interest for Every Linden I bought , and the Premium Account I had for a while… Sincerely Killer Rives

You won’t lose it, it will still be in Second Life, SL isn’t going anywhere any time soon.
But if you choose to also try Sansar, you’ll probably have to start from scratch.
